‘English Folk Dance’ was composed for the young British trumpet soloist and 1st ever winner of the Eric Aubier Trumpet Competition, Matilda Lloyd.
This pleasing concert work shows the versatility of the trumpet through the fast and typically rustic English sounding jaunty folk dances, as well as the beauty of tone in the romantic sounding slower middle section.
Throughout, there is a great deal of inter-play between the trumpet and piano with infectious question & answer phrases between the two instruments. The work is peppered with sudden extremes of dynamic giving it a sense of fun and the cadenza and flourishing end demands instant applause from an audience.
‘English Folk Dance’ is an ideal crowd-pleasing concert work and its bouncy melodies, modern trumpet techniques and flashy cadenza passages make this a perfect light piece to include in concert programmes or recitals.
