Claude Debussy (1862-1918) was a French composer who is often associated with the early Impressionist movement. He is best known for his evocative Piano compositions, from which these Two Pieces For Clarinet And Piano have been transcribed. The Golliwogs Cakewalk is taken from a suite of works inspired by Debussys daughter and her toys. The cakewalk was a popular dance in the 1890s and 1900s, and is reflected in the syncopated ragtime style. The Girl With Flaxen Hair is taken from Debussys first book of preludes. Its title character is inspired by a poem about a Scottish maiden, who is supposed to symbolise tranquillity and simplicity aspects which are reflected in both the melody and harmony.
